Is there a trick to getting the blue stamping out of a stamped cross stitch?

Hello,

For stamped cross stitch, what is the usual size floss that is used? I have a stamped design, and the floss I have is DMC's Perle 3. It seems too thick for the stamped fabric - I can get it through the grid holes once, but I think it's going to be a real problem when I start crossing my stitches.

Is there any trick to stamped cross stitching when stitching on a pre-quilted baby blanket. The directions said to only go through one layer because the stitches will show on the back of the quilt. I am finding it difficult to determine where the "X"s will end up. Thanks, Becky
