Doris,
Prima has a girl's bolero pattern that appears to be rather dressy. Perhaps this would work for your granddaughter?

Monkeysuits at http://www.monkeysuits.com has great knitting patterns for children's clothing. The website http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/boys_clothing.php also has links to a number of patterns for boy's clothing.

I agree that "Once the knit stitch is mastered, you can make the same kind of cloth using a purl stitch, knitting one row and purling one row across. Then you can experiment with ribbing."
Another way you can practice "knitting one row and purling another row" besides dishcloths, is knitting fingerless gloves. Cast on about 28 stitches. Knit 4 rows of ribbing. Then knit one row and purl another row for about 20 rows. End by knitting 4 rows of ribbing. Just get a yarn needle and sew the 2 borders together. An instant fingerless glove!
