It's very sweet of you to want to do this for your neice. The best pattern I could find that matches your description is this Oversized Poncho on the Lion Brand Web site. It's a pattern for a man, but perhaps you could make it more feminine looking with different yarn choices?

I'm looking for a poncho pattern, for my neice she is handycap and is in a wheelchair ,she is 18 and wears a med to a large adult, It has to be tightly croched so she can't get her fingers through the holes,no ties, no fringe,there good for eating, she has the mind of an 18 month old .My sister lives about 10 miles from the wisconson border In Illinois. So its cold there she has two fleese ponchoes she has been useing for the last 4 years but they don't fit her any more.She uses a sweetshirt under the ponchos. I could problly make one up but everything I've found has a wide neck line and calls for a tie,a single crochet would be great.

I'm doing all this her and she, I'll let you get to know her, Her name is Catie she has what they call angelman syndrum, Catie can't talk but sshe lets you know what she wants.She can't walk but she stands and when her dad takes her into bed she walks with him.I live In southern Indiana and I see them about 3 times a year ( not enough ) But she knows me and I get all the best loves and kisses from her that anyone could want. She's was a gift from heaven when she was given to us and as long as god see fit to let us keep her we are the lucky ones.
