Heart Tie Dye Technique
From LoveToKnow Crafts
The heart tie dye technique is one of the most popular designs seen on shirts and other wearable tie dyed goods.
While tie-dye hearts are a little more challenging than free-form or spiral techniques, they are very do-able. First, fold your shirt in half vertically. Then, along the fold, draw half a heart (as if you were going to cut out a Valentine) in pencil (don't worry, it will wash out). Then, following your pencil line, carefully pleat (accordion fold) from one end of your heart line to the other. Once your pleat is complete, secure it with a rubber band or rubber bands. This will make your heart shape once your shirt is dyed.
An alternate method for creating a heart is to draw a pencil heart on the front of a shirt, then use basting stitches to sew around the edge of the heart. Pull on the threads to gather the heart edges before wrapping with rubber bands.
