Free Project: Loom Knitted Scarf

From LoveToKnow Crafts

If you’re looking for a quick and easy project to do with your knitting loom but you’re a little tired of making loom knitted hats, maybe it’s time to add a loom knitted scarf to your repertoire.

It’s fun to make matching hats and scarves, and you can make both on your loom in a matter of hours using only one skein of yarn. You will, however, need two different knitting looms to complete both projects.

Supplies

  • Small round knitting loom or knitting board
  • One skein of yarn, or about 100 yards
  • Loom hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Instructions

If using a small round loom, loop your yarn around the peg that is on the side of the loom. Wrap your yarn first around the back of the first peg, then around the front clockwise and around the back again so that the peg is surrounded by a complete loop.

Repeat this process until all the pegs have one loop on them. Then wrap them again in the same manner so they all have two loops on them.

The process is similar for a board loom, but instead of using all the pegs you should only wrap the number of pegs on each side that will give you a good width for a scarf. Either way, this pattern will give you a long tube that will make a double-thick scarf.

Beginning with the first peg you wrapped and continuing in the same direction around the loom, use the loom hook to pick up the bottom loop and slide it over the top of the peg, leaving the top loop on the peg. Continue around until you have one loop left on each peg.

Wrap each peg as before and continue in this manner until your scarf is the length you want or you almost run out of thread.

To remove the scarf from the loom, thread your yarn needle and pick all the loops off the pegs (you should only have one loop on each peg when you do this. Fold the scarf in half the way you want it to look when finished and use the loops as a guide to sew the end closed. Finish by sewing the opposite end closed with another piece of yarn.

Another way to finish this would be to simply pull the project off the loom and either use the loops to sew the end closed or fold the loops into the inside of the project and then sew it closed. When you come to the end, you will see the way that is best for you to finish the project.

The Joy of Loom Knitting

Scarves are not exactly the longest projects in the knitting world (in terms of time, anyway, if you’ll pardon the half-pun), but they become even quicker projects when knitted up on looms. The bonus is you get an extra-thick scarf without any extra work, so it’s great for people who don’t like to knit in the round.

Loom knitting is easier than standard knitting. It would be a great way to get a child interested in yarn crafts who might not have the patience or skills for knitting with needles yet. Loom knitting projects are as close to instant gratification as knitting gets. I have a feeling that I’ll be making scarves and hats out of every interesting yarn I come across. There are a lot worse things than having a closet full of homemade hats and scarves (or bestowing these easy gifts on all your family and friends). Have fun!

Madison,

I believe tweens should be able to complete a loom knitted scarf with adult supervision. Loom knitting is much easier than standard knitting. However, it is true that some tweens may lack the patience for this type of project.
