Free Easy Crochet Patterns

From LoveToKnow Crafts

Are you having trouble finding free easy crochet patterns? The hardest thing when starting out in any new craft is to find patterns that you want to make that are simple enough for you to get through but don’t look incredibly basic or like something you’d be embarrassed to wear or use.

Easy Crochet Patterns

This is particularly true in learning how to crochet, because a lot of the basic learn to crochet booklets still include 1970s-era patterns for hot pads and things that you probably would never use or never want to use. Here are some resources for quick, easy and free crochet patterns you can download now.

Crochet and Knitting

Knitting and crochet often go together, as they do on this site. Its easy patterns page offers free easy crochet patterns for beginners, plus a link to more patterns to try once you’re a little more comfortable with your hook and thread.

Nearly 50 free and easy patterns to crochet are provided here, from hair scrunchies to baby clothes, vests to scarves to throws and booties. You’re sure to find something here that you want to make that it won’t give you a headache trying to master.

Lion Brand Yarn's Free Easy Crochet Patterns

Why not go straight to the source for your patterns? You’d think a company that makes yarn would have some good ideas about what to do with their products, and Lion Brand certainly delivers with a wide array of projects for knitters and crochet lovers alike.

The company’s crochet page doesn’t have a special section for beginner patterns, but you can often easily find the patterns for beginners by searching the page for words such as easy, simple, beginner or fast. Or click on a pattern that looks interesting and the pattern will tell you the skill level required to complete it. Go for projects that state they are for beginners before trying any advanced beginner, intermediate or advanced projects.

Planet Shoup

While not all of the patterns on Planet Shoup’s easy and cheap page are strictly for beginners, there are a lot of patterns here to keep you interested and some things (like the poncho) that you can aspire to after a little practice.

This site is big on cat toys and blankets, which is a good place to start because the projects are small and your cat probably isn’t going to complain too much if it doesn’t turn out perfectly.

Afghan patterns

This page, from the Project Linus group in Riverside, Calif., offers seven quick and easy crochet patterns that are perfect for beginners. Check this site out and learn more about a great organization that gives blankets to children in hospitals.

Tips for picking easy crochet projects

  • Start small: the smaller a project is, the less time it will take and the less likely you are to get frustrated and give up.
  • Start straight: pick a project like a scarf or baby afghan that doesn’t require turning or sizing.
  • Read the pattern: before you start, or even buy yarn, read through the pattern a few times. Do you know how to do everything that you will need to do to complete the project? If you don’t, where can you learn? If you need to know how to do a stitch, check out Stitch Guide for videos and drawings of basic and not so basic steps. (This site also has good patterns, just click on a stitch and it will provide you with a couple of patterns that use it.)
  • Have fun: Don’t worry about everything coming out just exactly perfect the first time around. Everyone makes mistakes, especially when they are learning new things. So be adventurous and have fun learning!.

Ely,

The Lion Brand Web site has a helpful guide offering tips on estimating how much yarn to buy for a particular project. However, I would personally recommend buying more than you expect to use and returning whatever is left over. This is much more convenient than running out of yarn and being unable to find what you need for a project.
