Free Baby Quilt Patterns

From LoveToKnow Crafts

There are many free baby quilt patterns out there if you know where to look. The problem is, with so many free craft project websites out there (including this one!) it can be difficult to find the free baby quilt patterns amid all the other projects and patterns posted on the different sites.

Here are some direct links to the best free baby quilt patterns out there. You’ll never run out of perfect patterns for welcoming new bundles of joy into the world!

Free Quilt

A collection of patterns from sites around the web, Free Quilt has a nice little collection of free baby quilt patterns. Be sure to check out the baby boots pattern if you need a project for a family that loves the West.

Many of these are simple projects that even beginners could make, or more experienced quilters could finish in a short amount of time for a last-minute homemade gift for a baby shower that snuck up on you. Several projects link back to Project Linus, a group that makes quilts and knitted and crocheted blankets for children in hospitals, so if you make too many quilts you’ll know what to do with them!

Quilting Passion

For all sorts of baby projects, including quilts, visit Quilting Passion. Here you will find links to patterns for quilts, bibs, growth charts, toys and more. Any of these items would be great for baby (or mom) and will show of your sewing skills, even if they aren’t all strictly quilts.

Free Quilt Ideas

For a cute collection of patterns scaled down to baby size, visit Free Quilt Ideas. None of these designs are particularly babyish, which makes them perfect for the mom with the immaculately designed modern house.

You could also make these basic patterns in baby-inspired prints to add a little baby flair.

Free Patterns Online

If you’d like to build your own quilt from a block pattern, check out the blocks at Free Patterns Online. While not specifically for babies, the pinwheels and simple squares are whimsical and can be done in baby-themed fabric or pastels.

The beauty of building your own quilt pattern from a set of blocks is that you can make the pattern whatever size you like, from the smallest preemie baby blanket to a huge king sized cover. You can also mix up the blocks to make a design that is truly your own.

Another great site with just a ton of quilt blocks is Quilters Cache. Again, no specific pages are set aside for baby quilts, but you can pick a block (or several) and make your own baby quilt pattern from that.

Designing Your Own Free Baby Quilting Pattern

If you choose to make your own design from the quilt blocks shown on one of these sites, or even on your own design, it’s good to have an idea of how large you want your quilt to be in order to get started. Of course that is helpful for knowing how much fabric you need to buy, but it also helps you figure out what size block to use.

If you know you want your quilt to be 24 inches wide, for instance you know that you’ll need four six-inch squares if you aren’t using a border. Then you can pick out pattern blocks that make six-inch squares. Quilters Cache above has all its patterns organized by size, making it easy to find exactly what you are looking for.

There isn’t really a standard size for quilts, especially baby quilts. The mattress itself is usually 26 inches by 48 inches for a crib, though there is some variation. This doesn’t mean you want to make a quilt that is 26 by 48. You might want to add width so your quilt can hang over the side of the bed (less important for quilts designed to go on cribs) or length so it will cover pillows.

You could also consult one of the free baby quilt patterns listed above and apply that finished size to your quilt. There really is no wrong way to make a quilt or a wrong size to make it, as long as it is made with love.

I have the above pattern and I will tell you the name and how to get it. You have to order it since you will no longer find it in the stores. It is called Star Flower and is found in booklet number 3778 in a booklet called Bold and Beautiful Quilts and there are 16 patterns from each booklet. These are the Aunt Martha quilt patterns and there is a company in the state of Missouri (I think it is in Kansas City Missouri) and there are many other booklets. The booklets are not expensive and you go to their web site and order them. Try typing in the search engine of Aunt Martha quilts and you will find all kinds of things and the company that sells them. I think it is colonialquilts.com but I cannot be 100% certain since it has been a while since I contacted them. I bought the series of booklets back in the 1970's and I have them except for two since I have the other patterns in other books. The above is a beautiful pattern indeed. I hope that I was of some help.

Janet,

Unfortunately, the quilt photo is simply an image from our stock photography service. LoveToKnow Crafts does not have a pattern available.

Dear Friends,

I very much like the quilt pattern at the top of this page but cannot seem to find the link to it. Could you please help with this?

Many thanks.
