Embroidery Sewing Machines
From LoveToKnow Crafts
Embroidery sewing machines are a relatively new innovation, at least for the home sewer. Companies that specialize is embroidered items have had computerized machines that would do the stitching for them for many years. It’s only been in the last decade or so that individuals could purchase embroidery sewing machines, and now there are many on the market that can help you make beautiful designs quickly and easily.
What is an embroidery sewing machine?
An embroidery sewing machine is pretty much just what it sounds like. It is a machine that looks a lot like a sewing machine, but instead of helping you to sew garments and other wonders, it stitches designs on the fabric for you.
Embroidery sewing machines can be used for something as simple as monogramming a T-shirt or a set of towels or something as complex and beautiful as an embroidered illustration on a painting or wall hanging.
Just about anything you could do embroidering by hand can be done with an embroidery sewing machine.
How embroidery sewing machines work
An embroidery sewing machine is much like a regular sewing machine with a computer built in. The computer stores the patterns and tells the needle how to sew to make the embroidered pattern that you want.
To make a design, you simply select the pattern you want to use, place fabric (kept stiff with a hoop) under the needle, load the machine up with the desired color of thread and start that machine running.
Unlike a conventional sewing machine, embroidery sewing machines don’t require the use of a foot pedal to make the motor run. You can leave your machine unattended as it works out the design for you. Of course, if the design requires more than one color you will have to change the thread whenever a color change is needed in the pattern.
Most machines come with some basic built-in patterns like alphabets for monogramming and basic pictures. You can also purchase embroidery designs of just about any genre imaginable.
These patterns can be purchased at the store where you buy your machine or on the Internet. You can also purchase and download designs from the Internet if you have a device that allows you to transfer information from your computer to your embroidery sewing machine.
Another option for getting embroidery designs is to design something yourself. You can draw an image and use special software to create a design the computer in the sewing machine will understand. This, understandably, is complicated work, not to be undertaken by a beginner. If you want to create your own embroidery designs, take a class to learn all you can about it before beginning.
Choosing an embroidery sewing machine
There are a wide variety of embroidery sewing machines available on the market today at a wide range of prices. Some machines are embroidery only, while others also allow you to perform the basic tasks of a conventional sewing machine.
There are all sorts of bells and whistles available on the most costly machines, such as automatic threading and color change, touch-screen LCD monitors, tons of built-in fonts and motifs, the ability to sew larger pieces, resize designs, change font sizes, built-in conversion software 9so you can purchase designs made for a different brand of machine and read them on yours) and much more.
Less costly machines are less fancy, but they still include many designs and options that are great for beginners.
If you want to start an embroidery business, you can also purchase a professional-quality machine with multiple needles that will be able to finish projects much faster than the home models can. This is overkill for most people, but very cool to watch.
Before you buy an embroidery sewing machine, think about what features you would like and what you are most likely to use it for. Visit any local retailers that carry embroidery sewing machines and ask to try out the ones you like (or at least see them in action).
An embroidery sewing machine can be a big investment, but it also gives you a lot of freedom to be more creative and get projects done faster.
