Christmas Card Crafts

From LoveToKnow Crafts

When you're planning your holiday crafts, don't forget about Christmas card crafts. While most people don't think about making their own Christmas cards, it's a lot of fun to make Christmas card crafts, and your will be one of the cards that's sure not to get tossed by New Year's.

Christmas Cards with Stickers

Probably the easiest Christmas card crafts are those cards made with stickers. They look great, are very quick and easy, and can be mass-produced assembly line style in an afternoon.

If you're thinking a Christmas card made with stickers can't be a glamorous or beautiful as those that comes from the stores, think again. There's a huge array of Christmas stickers ranging from one-word sentiments like "Joy" and "Celebrate" to rhinestone-crusted candy canes and simple stickers with gifts, Christmas trees and other cute themes.

Choose to make all of your cards the same by buying stickers in bulk, or use different stickers from the same package to make several different cards around the same theme.

Use one large sticker or several smaller stickers on the front of your card, depending on the size of the card and the size of the stickers. Leave room to write or stamp a simple message if you like. Another nice touch is to use a small sticker on the outside of the envelope to add a little extra fun.

Rubber Stamped Christmas Cards

Rubber stamps make great Christmas card crafts. Check out The Stampin' Place for a good look at some of the many different types of holiday rubber stamps there are out there. I think there are more Christmas rubber stamps than any other kind, and you can usually find them in your local crafts store or stamp shop year round, so you can get a jump on your Christmas card crafts.

Whether you want to use Santa, angels, Christmas trees, snowflakes, a religious theme or even just words, you can find a stamp or two to make your card complete.

There are so many options when it comes to rubber stamping Christmas cards. Use one main stamp as your image, or repeat a smaller stamp or a couple of different stamps. Use different colors. Color your stamps in by hand. Use embossing ink and a heat gun to make your stamp stand out. Use a large stamp of words as your background and mount a different, smaller stamp on a piece of colored paper and mount that on the card. Or use stamps as a border for another stamp or your handwritten message.

You can even find stamps that have holiday messages printed on them so all you have to do is stamp and sign!

Minimalist Christmas Cards

My favorite new idea for Christmas card crafts is using a holiday paper punch for a perfectly minimalist card.

Start with a small white (note card sized) greeting card. You could use a larger one if you wanted, but I love the idea of a simple, sophisticated little card.

Pick out some festive paper. This could be as simple as a piece of red or green construction paper, or a piece of Christmas-themed card stock (you could probably even use wrapping paper) or an elegant card stock in red or green stripes, or whatever color you like.

Cut the paper to the size of the card and paste it on the inside right panel of the card. Choose a holiday punch (you could also use a star or heart, which may be easier to find, but the kit mentioned above has a stocking, bell, star, snowflake, bow and Christmas tree) and center it near the top of the front of the card. Punch out the shape.

This will allow a little bit of the paper to peek through. Mount a lighter colored piece of paper inside (below the part that shows through the punch) if necessary to write your message on. Leave the front as it is, or stamp a message on the front as well.

Using Old Christmas Cards

We all get so many cards each year, and most people hate to just throw them away. Save the ones you love and make them into Christmas card crafts. A simple way to save them is to punch a hole in the top left corner and thread some yarn through. Then you can hang them on the tree as Christmas ornaments. Or put all the cards on a ring like those used to organize bags of embroidery floss and set them on your coffee table as a sort of holiday book.

Cards with really beautiful pictures on the front can be turned into holiday art by framing them in simple frames. These can take the place of the family photos on the mantle for one season, or can be used to decorate a buffet, unused tabletop or even the bathroom countertop!
