There’s just something about Celtic designs. They provide a wonderful, subtle way to decorate your home for St. Patrick’s Day, but they are also wonderful motifs to have around the house all year long, especially if they're cross stitched!
Cross stitch and Celtic design
A lot of crafters are obsessed with Celtic designs, and there are many different websites that provide information and designs with Celtic themes.
It’s no wonder that Celtic designs are a favorite of cross stitch fans and other crafters as well. These designs are graceful, powerful and striking. They usually incorporate sweeping curves and geometric patterns that can be quite complex.
As this history describes, the Celts were a nomadic race that loved art and poetry. The Celts did not initially have a written language, so a lot of their culture was passed down through art that we are lucky to still have today.
Sources for Celtic cross stitch
There are hundreds of websites out there where you can find information and patterns for Celtic style cross stitch. Here are a handful of sources.
Aon Celtic
This site has some wonderful little charts for a Claddagh ring, a Celtic cross, a beautiful Kells bird, some traditional dancing shoes and several options for borders. These charts are colored but they do not offer suggestions for the types of thread you might use, leaving your options wide open to pick your favorite colors.
Celtic Cross Stitch
This page is a great guide to the world of Celtic cross stitch. If you don’t already know how to cross stitch (and need more information than is provided in our own Cross Stitching Instructions) you can learn how here. The best part of this site is the free chart generator that allows you to type in any phrase and produce a chart of that phrase in Celtic lettering.
Gold Cup
This software design website also offers charts for a golden brooch, noughts and crosses, a couple of borders and a cool border within a border pattern that would be great as a wall hanging or the front of a pillow. The charts are made to print on a color printer, so if you don’t have a way to print in color you might want to skip this site.
TW Designworks
This page offers a free Celtic cross pattern that would look great as a Christmas ornament (because who said Celtic designs were only for St. Patrick’s Day?) or even on a set of coasters. There’s also a cute Celtic inspired ornament you could stitch up in no time. This would make an adorable little extra something on a gift bag or present, just make sure you tell the person that it is part of the gift!
Eterna Silk
Another lovely Celtic cross design can be found at Eterna Silk. While you don’t have to make this design with their beautiful 100 percent silk threads, it does look really stunning stitched up that way. This would be a beautiful gift for an Irish (or wish-they-were-Irish) person in your life.
