Easy American Flag Crafts for Kids

The crafts below require very little in terms of preparation or supervision. They can be finished in less than one hour and generally can be set up for children to do themselves. They are suitable for preschool to third grade. (If paint is involved, keep a general eye on the area to make sure it's the craft that gets painted and not the walls or furniture!)

Flag Fans- Paint stirrers from the hardware store and cardstock make these super easy fans practical on a hot July evening as well as easy to create.

Front Door Flag Hanging-This miniature version of the stars and stripes can sit decoratively on your front door. Using ribbon and fabric glue, it goes together easily in an afternoon.

Popsicle Stick Flag-Glue, good old-fashioned popsicle sticks and some red, white, and blue paint make this a super easy craft to do on the day of the big celebration. Kids can carry these flags to a parade and wave them proudly!

Old Glory Picture Frame-Pre-cut stencils and wood pieces make this picture frame a cinch to put together.

Medium Difficulty

These American flag crafts for kids listed below require some adult supervision or help for younger kids but older kids may be able to complete them on their own. These crafts should take about an afternoon to complete or may have to be completed in stages to allow for drying.

American Flag Chair Covers-No-sew chair covers really set the mood around the dining room table.

Musical Flag-Using small jingle bells and a bunch of red, white and blue paint, this craft is sure to make your star spangled festivities musical.

Beaded Flag Safety Pin-Beaded flag safety pin is fun to wear and fun to make. Use a tray with a small lip around the edge as a work surface so that you can work with the beads without worrying about little fingers spilling them all over the floor.

American Flag Windsock-This easy to make windsock will decorate your porch. It doesn't require any sewing, but it will need to set until the glue dries.

Patriotic Planters-Decorate your house with a star spangled theme using these cute planters. Use terra cotta pots and terra cotta paint to create the flag effect. Adults may have to do the stars to get them to come out evenly.

Difficult Crafts

These difficult crafts require more time to prepare or advanced techniques. They are good crafts for you to do on a weekend in June before the grand celebration. They may also require advanced crafting techniques and significant adult participation.

American Flag Porch Banner-Show your patriotism with this fantastic banner that will hang across the front of your porch or out the windows. Tie-dye techniques lend the project a kind of 'cool' look so even your tweens might like to join in the tie-dying fun!

Flag T-shirt-Start a tradition of making your own Fourth of July t-shirts with this craft. Use small tipped paint bottles to draw small designs on the shirt.

Patriotic Bird House-Definitely for the advanced crafter, this birdhouse will brighten up your backyard for the big celebration day.

Tips for Crafting with Kids

  • Have all of your materials on hand before you begin. Make sure that everything is within easy reach. This helps keep the mess contained.
  • Do let your children do as much of the craft as possible. It won't come out as neat as the picture, but they'll be more proud of their finished product if it was truly theirs.
  • Lay down a plastic tarp or garbage bags for messy painting crafts to make clean up a breeze.
  • Work with beads on a tray with a lip around the edge so that you can have the beads out but don't have to worry about spilling them.
