Father’s Day is less then a month away (June 21) and I was wondering if anyone has any special crafts they make for Father’s Day gifts?

Father’s Day is so hard, I think women are much easier to make things for. I’m thinking about doing a duct tape wallet for my Dad this year and some sort of photo craft gift for my stepfather. I want to have my son make something for his Daddy, but I’m not sure what preschool craft will hold his attention long enough—maybe one of those decorated coffee mugs from the kits you can buy at Hobby Lobby?

My daughter is actually working on a paint by numbers of a dog that looks very much like our dog that passed away in January. He was my husband’s dog and very loved, so she wanted to paint him a picture of him. We’re going to frame it and everything.

What a thoughtful daughter you have! That sounds like a very lovely gift for any animal lover. My son is thinking he wants to make something for Daddy that has Iron Man on it now. (They watch lots of superhero cartoons together and he knows that Iron Man is Daddy’s favorite.)

T-shirts are an easy craft and every dad can use them, even if it’s just to sleep in. Iron-on decals would be a fun way to incorporate a superhero, though I think these have to be ordered online. I’ve looked before in stores and couldn’t find them.

You could also use fabric paints or permanent markers to trace children’s hands onto the shirt.

T-Shirts are an awesome gift for dads and really—dads can always use them. We did one a couple of years ago using fabric paint and hand prints. My daughter ‘walked’ her hand prints around the shirt and then when she gave it to him she said “This way you’re always in the palm of my hand.”

Yes, Mom helped with that last bit.

We did a photo t-shirt for my husband one year and a handprint one—i think the saying on the handprint one was “Hands Down Greatest Dad” or something like that. You can also do footprints on a grilling apron or a t-shirt and say something like “my kids walk all over me” or something like that wink

I think we’re gonna be lazy and just take him out to eat this year at his favorite grill restaurant and then give him a Chef’s Apron for when he grills at home. We found out they make them for Eureka, the show, which happens to be his favorite television show—so we’ll see

Remember how Michaels had a whole week of fun crafts to make for Mothers Day? Well, they only have one day to make a craft for dads, but it’s a t-shirt! On June 14 from 1-3 you can use their paint supplies to design a shirt. You have to buy a shirt for $2.50 but you’d still be saving on not having to buy all the supplies.

A small add-on gift that dad’s will treasure is a fill-in-the-blank. My son’s preschool did this for Mother’s Day and I loved it. Just print out a paper with the following:

—Dad is the best because ____
—My favorite thing my dad makes is ____
—Dad is good at ____
—Dad’s favortie food is ____

You can make up your own suggestions, too, of course then have your child fill in their answers or write them in yourself if your child is too small. When my son did it for me, he said that my favorite thing to do is play with him and that he loves me because I make the best English muffins. It was so cute!

K-Mart has t-shirt kits that say something about #1 Dad and #1 Grandpa with space for a little kid’s handprints. Very cute if you don’t want to decorate a t-shirt from scratch. I think they are even on sale this week.

Don’t forget that LTK recipes has some great ideas for edible Fathers Day treats. There is a new slideshow up with some fun ways of making trail mix with some of dads favorite ingredients. The address for the slideshow is right here.

I just wanted the group here to know, my kids had a ball making a t-shirt for dad with their own special designs. My husband was thrilled at the gift and as he put it “it was one of a kind!” Thanks for the idea!!
