My son made a mystery object at school today. It’s supposed to be a sand castle but I’m concerned about the base is. I thought the teacher said it was Mod Podge, but that’s a glue right? This is like a big pile of white foam that has beads stuck in it. It hardened overnight but you can tap your nail into it. It looks a lot like foam insulation, but I would hope that they don’t use that in a preschool.

Any ideas what this could be?

Here’s the photo:

Hi Holly

I think the base of the sane castle was coated with mod podge. The base could be made from paper mache or even a piece of styrofoam or other type of foam. The mod podge dries to a texture that does not get hard and brittle and still remains pliable enough that you would be able to mark it with your fingernail.

I hope this may help alittle

I believe Terry is correct. Aren’t kid projects the greatest? I’ve learned to keep my mouth shut whenever my son brings me something. I once commented on a very pretty rocket ship that apparently was a giant blueberry and he threw a complete fit. Now, we just wait and see what he says about his creations.

That’s as good of a guess as any I’ve heard, Terry. I’m going to ask his teachers on Wednesday what it was made from. Whatever it is, it seems like it would be great for other molding crafts as long as it’s easy to use and safe.

I spoke to my son’s teacher today about the sand castle and she said it was made from a lightweight clay and covered in Mod Podge to hold the beads in place. She said it’s a kid’s clay that is really stretchy. My son has since told me that he thinks the sand castle is “disgusting” and threw it away. Funny.

Hi Holly - Kids sure are funny!

You know Dana the same thing happened with my daughter and something my grandson had made in preschool years back. I can’t remember what it was but I do know whatever my daughter thought it was - it wasn’t! We also all learned very quickly to not say anything except a generic - How pretty (or whatever fits) until we knew for sure what the artwork really was! grin
