Ideas for teaching scissor skills

Apparently, my son’s preschool teacher thinks he’s a bit behind in the scissors skills department. I’ve been trying to get him interested in practicing using the scissors, but he’s just not taking the bait. He says it’s boring and he’d rather play with his cars and trucks. And, he gets frustrated really easily when the cutting doesn’t go as well as he wants. Any ideas to encourage him?

Michaels Birthday Party!

Well, it’s official. We are a crafty Michael’s family. My son is having his 6 birthday party there in a few weeks. It seems like a very reasonable deal—$50 to rent the craft room for two hours plus someone from the store to lead the craft. There are several crafts projects to choose from, which cost extra, but range for about $4 per child to $20. It’s worth the $50 to me to not have to clean my house before and after the party.

Thanksgiving Toddler Crafts

I always like to make little crafts with my son and send them to relatives (just grandparents and great grandparents) for each holiday. We did pumpkins for Halloween, and I was thinking about something turkey-related for Thanksgiving. Anyone have any ideas? It should probably be flat for easy mailing.

“Where the Wild Things Are” crafts

I’m planning on taking my son to see the movie this week—he loves “Where the Wild Things Are”! I also came across this link for a bunch of really cool craft projects. Some you can make with kids, some are just for kids to enjoy when you’re done. My favorite ones are the puppets and the cupcakes!

Saint costume suggestions

My son’s kindergarten class is celebrating All Saints Day next week and they are all supposed to dress up like their favorite saint. He doesn’t really have a favorite, so I’m planning to do something pretty general. Any suggestions? If I had enough time and was crafty, I’d try to make a costume, but at this point I’ll be happy to just put something appropriate together.

Ideas for kid Halloween party crafts?

My son is having a Halloween party on Saturday with kids ranging from 3-10. Does anybody have ideas for some basic crafts we could try to keep them busy? We are roasting hot dogs, making smores, and breaking a ghost pinata. I’d like to try a craft, but it needs to be something we can do outside on picnic tables and something that is appropriate for a wide age group.

My family just got a new kitten, and I was thinking it would be fun to have my toddler help make him some toys. Does anyone have any ideas?

Of course, my son’s favorite phrase right now is “That’s mine!,” so I don’t know how much the kitten will actually get to use these toys….

Does anyone have any really simple craft ideas for toddlers? My son is two and a half and has some special needs, so I can’t count on him having a long attention span. He loves coloring, and he’s really excited about the leaves changing this fall.

Building a basic playhouse

Since we finally have a large backyard for the first time ever, I’d like to build Ryan a playhouse. Something easy that just uses basic tools and isn’t too hard. Maybe just a door and some windows and we’ll be set. Has anyone done this before or know of any resources for cheap, or free(!) plans?

Lowes Kid’s Projects

For those of you who have a Lowes nearby, they have these great workshops for kids and parents to make crafts at. They give the kids a workshop apron and goggles and the supplies for the project are free. There’s one coming up this weekend where they can make a backyard ball toss. Details here.
