Star Crochet Stitch

Create more texture in your next crochet piece by using the star stitch. The star stitch is also known as the daisy stitch. At first, it may seem intimidating because it uses a combination of steps and rows to complete, but do not let that sway you from giving it a try. It is really quite easy.

Star Stitch

This crochet tutorial will teach you how to crochet the simple star stitch. The stitch creates a dense but delicate looking star design. This is a more advanced stitch and will require previous knowledge and experience with basic crochet stitches before tackling.

Abbreviations

  • ch(s) = chain(s)
  • YO = yarn over
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

Making the First Star Stitch

  1. Crochet an uneven number of chs. Note: The foundation ch will always be an uneven number.
  2. Turn. Insert the hook into the second ch from the hook, YO and pull up a loop. There are now 2 loops on the hook.
  3. Repeat with the next 4 chs for a total of 6 loops on the hook. Note: Each loop is a leg on the star.
  4. YO and pull through all 6 loops.
  5. Ch 1. This creates the center of the star.

Modify Patterns With Star Stitch

Now that you have learned a new stitch you will want to give it a whirl. The repetition of the star stitch rows makes it ideal for modifying basic patterns with square or rectangular shapes, such as this placemat, this dishcloth, this scarf, or this poncho. Use the yarn and hook size requested and simply make sure the foundation chain starts with an uneven number, adding or subtracting a chain if necessary. Work the star stitch instead of the stitches the pattern asks for until the item measures the pattern's finished size or the size you desire.
